A Guernsey team of four will be heading to Bordeaux this September for one of the most unique marathons in the world – and all in aid of local charity Guernsey Motor Neurone.
Tom Falla and three of his closest friends – Dominic Heaume, Adam Dorey, and James Draper – will be running the Marathon du Médoc on Saturday 6 September, donning shimmering mermaid costumes to match this year’s ‘Under the Sea’ theme. The team’s aim is to raise at least £10,000 for Guernsey Motor Neurone (GMN), a cause very close to Tom’s heart.
In June 2020, Tom’s wife Daisy was diagnosed with MND at the age of just 33. Over the last five years, GMN has been a constant support to Daisy and their family – and now, Tom is determined to give back.
“The charity has been a lifeline for us,” said Tom. “From emotional support to equipment and practical help, GMN makes life a little easier for people navigating this incredibly tough diagnosis. Running this marathon is our way of saying thank you – and helping make sure others continue to receive that same support.”
The Marathon du Médoc is no ordinary race. Taking runners on a 42.195km (26.2 mile) journey through France’s famous Médoc wine region, the event includes wine-tasting stops, gourmet food such as oysters, steak and cheese, and a famously festive atmosphere.
“It’s a serious distance – but taken in a less serious way,” said Tom. “We’re training hard to make sure we enjoy every moment, especially the French food and wine along the route!”
Two of the runners – Dominic and Adam – completed the gruelling Barcelona Ironman last year, while James has a marathon under his belt from a decade ago.
“I’m probably the least prepared,” laughs Tom. “But Daisy loved the idea of us dressing as mermaids, and that’s good enough motivation for me.”
