The Baton of Hope, the UK’s largest suicide prevention initiative, arrived in Jersey as part of its 2025 national tour, marking the largest mental health awareness initiative the Island has ever hosted.
Following the success of its inaugural tour in 2023, and with over 50 towns, cities and counties bidding to take part, Jersey was one of 20 locations across the British Isles selected to host the Baton during its six-week tour. Its arrival also aligned with the launch of Jersey’s own five-year Suicide Prevention Strategy, published earlier this year, which sets out a community-wide approach built on prevention, early intervention, and accessible mental health care.
Against a backdrop of blue skies, Islanders turned out across more than 25 locations to welcome the Baton and show support for over 30 local volunteer baton bearers. Each had their own deeply personal reasons for taking part: some directly impacted by suicide, others representing charities or frontline services who witness its effects first-hand. Collectively, their stories highlighted how suicide affects every part of society, and how by coming together as a community Jersey can play its part in preventing it and reducing stigma.
According to the Island’s Suicide Prevention Strategy, suicide remains a leading cause of preventable death in Jersey, with rates consistently above many comparable jurisdictions. These figures highlight the urgent need for prevention and the value of initiatives like the Baton of Hope in breaking stigma and encouraging open conversations.
Mike McCarthy, Co-Founder of Baton of Hope UK, said: “From its first tour in 2023 to this year’s expansion across 20 locations, the Baton of Hope has always been about reaching as many people as possible, raising awareness and reducing stigma. To bring the Baton to Jersey, the southernmost part of the British Isles, is both a positive confirmation of the expanded reach of this year’s tour and also a powerful reminder that suicide knows no boundaries. The unity we’ve seen here today shows the power of community in raising awareness, challenging stigma and creating hope.”
Lynne Capie, Chief Strategy Officer at Switch and a baton bearer, said: “Carrying the Baton today was both a personal and professional privilege. Like so many people, I’ve seen first-hand the devastating impact of suicide, and I believe deeply in the power of community to drive change. Supporting Thrive and the Baton of Hope alongside my colleagues has been humbling, but even more inspiring has been witnessing how every part of Jersey’s community has played their part.
“From government representatives and those working in public services to charities, veterans, emergency services, the media and the Jersey community, countless islanders have given their time and support to this hugely important initiative. This community effort truly represents who we are as an Island reinforces the tour’s message of hope.”
