The Government of Jersey has hosted the inaugural Cross-Nation Leadership Education Summit, a landmark gathering that brought together education ministers, senior officials, union leaders, and policy specialists from across the British Isles.
The Minister for Education and Lifelong Learning, Deputy Rob Ward, welcomed delegates from Jersey, the Isle of Man, Guernsey, Wales, and Northern Ireland, who were joined by the General Secretaries of NAHT, ASCL and NEU, alongside senior policy advisors and sector specialists. The event was expertly chaired by celebrated education journalist and Teacher Tapp co-founder, Laura McInerney.
Deputy Ward said: “Throughout the day, participants engaged in intense but highly constructive discussions on the challenges and opportunities facing education systems across our nations. Topics ranged from inclusion, workforce sustainability and funding, to student well-being and equity. What stood out most was the spirit of collegiality in the room, with a shared commitment to collaboration and the recognition that many of our challenges, and solutions are common across borders”
A recurring theme was the importance of turning dialogue into action. Delegates emphasised that this summit should not be a one-off, but the start of a regular, annual forum, rotating between host nations, where leaders can continue to share learning, develop strategies, and strengthen cross-national cooperation.
Deputy Ward added: “This summit marked an important first step in building lasting networks and a culture of shared problem-solving across jurisdictions. The energy, openness and commitment on display left no doubt: this is the beginning of something powerful a new tradition of collaboration to shape education systems that are resilient, inclusive, and fit for the future.”
