As planning gathers pace for this year’s parade, one of the driving forces behind a parish float is reflecting on a lifetime dedicated to keeping the Jersey Battle of Flowers alive.
A man with huge connections to Jersey and who has been involved with the island’s iconic Jersey Battle of Flowers since the age of four is sharing his story as preparations continue for this year’s St Mary and St Ouen entry.
Designer Marcus Davies has been part of the Battle of Flowers one way or another for most of his life, giving him a unique perspective on one of Jersey’s most cherished traditions.
Speaking about his earliest memories, Marcus recalled the excitement of attending the event as a young child and being captivated by the colour, atmosphere and community spirit. Over the years, that early fascination developed into active involvement designing a great many fantastic floats , constantly raising the bar and majorly contributing to the event’s continued success.
“The Battle of Flowers has always been a huge part of my life,” he said. “It’s not just about the parade, it’s about the people from all walks of life, many discovering a creative streak they never knew they had, the huge effort that goes on behind the scenes, and the sense of pride it brings to the island.”
Marcus highlighted the significant work that takes place long before the public sees the finished floats, with months of planning, building and preparation required each year. He also noted the challenges faced by organisers and participants, particularly in raising funds to cover the escalating costs.
Despite changes over time, he believes that the heart of the event remains the same. “It has evolved on several levels but the core of it, bringing the community together, is one of the biggest challenges. To find a team of volunteers to take time out from their busy lives is a great hurdle,” he said. “Yet for those who do, they benefit from the fun, the team work and ultimately the personal satisfaction of being an essential part in creating a masterpiece and that is something that makes the event so special.”
