Following a significant programme of work, AquaSplash Jersey have been awarded Dementia Friendly Business status.
The Dementia Friendly Business scheme was launched by Dementia Jersey in 2023, with Jersey Hospice the first to secure the accolade, and JT following this in 2024.
The scheme asks organisations to sign-up to an audit of customer facing spaces and services, and to complete a comprehensive training scheme for staff – as well as make an ongoing pledge to maintain inclusivity and accessibility. AquaSplash have given access to commercial and business areas of the organisation and worked hard to improve awareness of dementia for both customer-facing and office staff.
The scheme is open to all sectors, from retail to housing, utilities to entertainment, and finance to transport. Benefits of taking part include improved communication with clients, support for the workforce, and a wider impact on accessibility – as many of the outcomes can address several needs (such as visual impairment or sensory difficulties). Most importantly, the scheme means businesses pro-actively support the growing numbers of people on island with dementia or mild cognitive impairments.
To attain certification, AquaSplash have trained staff at all levels, reinstalled a Hearing Loop, identified ‘quiet times’ for the public, and begun a process of amending signage. They have a further implementation plan for additional changes over the coming months. As ongoing supporters of Dementia Jersey, they have also supported the Boost Your Brain risk reduction campaign by providing window space for a giant graphic display, and participating as a venue for the Big Brain Challenge.
Claudine Snape, CEO Dementia Jersey, said: “A huge well done to AquaSplash for achieving their Dementia Friendly Business certification! Their dedication truly highlights the power of this initiative. When businesses step up and embrace these practices, they’re not just improving their service – they’re actively shaping an island that’s compassionate and inclusive for all those living with dementia.”
Steve Dunford, Contract Manager at the AquaSplash said: “We’re very proud to have achieved Dementia Friendly Business status, highlighting our commitment as a leisure facility to create a welcoming, inclusive environment for all sectors of the community.”
