Over 50 local cyclists who will be taking on an incredible challenge this September in support of Macmillan Cancer Support Jersey.
The cyclists will be riding the full length of the Pyrenees from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, raising funds to support people in Jersey affected by cancer.
This prestigious cycling adventure begins in Biarritz on the Atlantic coast and concludes in Collioure on the Mediterranean, covering over 600km with nearly 10,000m of climbing across some of the most iconic climbs in the world of cycling. Riders will tackle legendary mountain cols such as the Col d’Aubisque and Col d’Aspin, made famous by the Tour de France. Along the way, they will pass through historic Pyrenean towns including Pau and Lourdes, experiencing the beauty and challenge of this mountainous route.
Taking place from 20th to 27th September, this gruelling yet rewarding journey represents more than just a personal achievement for each cyclist – it’s a powerful show of support for islanders facing cancer. Every mile they ride helps provide emotional, practical, and wellbeing support through Macmillan Jersey’s services at The Oasis, the charity’s dedicated cancer support and wellbeing centre.
The event aims to raise over £200,000 to help islanders facing cancer. This ride is for the families going through the unthinkable. It’s for those searching for hope. It’s for better care, stronger support, and a community that stands together when it matters most.
Cyclist Lydia Barratt commented: “For me, the cycling community is wonderful and having something to train for whilst fund raising to support others has really given me a huge sense of focus and purpose. Macmillan is a charity close to my heart, as it is for many of us on the challenge. We all know of somebody who’s needed their support whilst going through such a challenging time. Keeping this front of mind will help us all as we’re cycling through the mountainous terrain!”
Callum O’Connor added: “I’m fundraising in memory of my mum, Glynis, who sadly passed away in October last year after a short but incredibly tough battle with Squamous Cell Carcinoma. During that time, Macmillan Jersey were there to support us as a family – offering emotional, practical and wellbeing support when we needed it most. Now it’s my turn to give something back. As the charity relies fully on donations, I want to help them continue to make a difference.”
Steph Gibaut, CEO Macmillan Jersey said: “At Macmillan Jersey, we are incredibly proud of our community and their dedication to supporting people affected by cancer. This cycle challenge is not only a physical journey, but also a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience of those we support every day. We are deeply grateful to everyone involved – from the cyclists pushing their limits to the families, friends, and supporters cheering them on. The funds raised will help us continue providing vital emotional, practical, and wellbeing support to anyone affected by cancer, right here in Jersey.”
