Butterfield ‘knees-up’ to support charity

Butterfield is supporting Male Uprising Guernsey (MUG) in more ways than one this September, through sponsorship of Bermuda Shorts Week and partnering with the charity for the Butterfield Half Marathon.

MUG aims to increase awareness about prostate, bowel and testicular cancer, encouraging men of all ages to be more confident in asking questions about their health and any symptoms they may have.

With its headquarters in Bermuda, Butterfield once again partnered with MUG for this year’s Bermuda Shorts Week, a fundraising event which encourages islanders to wear traditional Bermuda shorts and socks to work. Participants pay a £20 registration fee that, this year, will go towards providing a continued supply of sun cream to schools in the Bailiwick of Guernsey to help protect the students from skin cancer. The funds will also help educate the next generation about the risk of sun exposure.

Employees from Butterfield’s Guernsey office will be baring their knees for the week of 7 September and sporting the MUG Bermuda socks. Butterfield’s Jersey office will join their Guernsey colleagues on the Friday of that week, also showing their support for the charity and cause.

Just a day before Bermuda Shorts Week is the Butterfield Half Marathon, which has also teamed up with MUG to help fundraise and build awareness for the charity. MUG was due to host the Ride 25 Sportive, supported by the Guernsey Velo Club, but when Covid-19 forced the Half Marathon to be postponed, the two events clashed and the ride was cancelled. So as not to leave MUG a fundraising event down, Butterfield partnered with the charity. MUG will be collecting donations around the finish area. There will also be tea, coffee and sausage rolls available, with all proceeds going towards MUG.

Richard Saunders, Managing Director of Butterfield, Guernsey said: “We are committed supporters of MUG, so the Butterfield Half Marathon partnership was a very welcomed addition for us. Bermuda Shorts Week is well-loved in our Channel Island offices and this year will be our first sponsoring the Half Marathon. With both events back-to-back, it makes for a very exciting start to the month”.

Mike Richards, Council Member at MUG commented: “We are extremely grateful to Butterfield for supporting us with the Half Marathon in addition to its continued support of Bermuda Shorts Week. This year has not been easy for charities, so we appreciate every opportunity to raise funds and develop awareness of what we do. The role of charities such as MUG to spread awareness and ensure people get the appropriate medical treatment, has never been more important”.
