Middle Prep students at Melrose took part in a Celebration of Learning Assembly last week, celebrating reading and the pupils’ enjoyment of books.
The assembly included recitals and singing, with students sharing some of their favourite books.
The event was part of Melrose’s participation in the ‘Go All In’ National Year of Reading initiative, which is being run locally by Guille-Allès Library, States of Guernsey, the Guernsey Literary Festival, Bright Beginnings, and Guernsey Arts. Bright Beginnings also generously gifted a book to each of the girls who took part in the assembly.
Nicola Lewis, Middle Prep Teacher at The Ladies’ College, said: “The children really got stuck into this assembly and it was lovely to see how excited they were to share the books and stories they enjoy.
“Julia Donaldson was a particular favourite. Her stories are so familiar to the children, and they had a lot of fun bringing the characters, rhymes and humour of those books to life.
“It was a simple but really joyful way to celebrate reading, and we are grateful to Guille-Allès Library and Bright Beginnings Children’s Charity for supporting the initiative.”
Tiffany Woosley, Children & Young People’s Collections Lead at the Guille-Allès Library, added: “At the Library we’re passionate about helping children discover the joy of reading, and this assembly was a wonderful example of that in action. It was fantastic to hear the students talk (and sing!) about their favourite books, and what they learned from reading them – and it was a brilliant reflection of the ‘Go All In’ message at the heart of the National Year of Reading. It’s always inspiring to see children excited about reading, and their Julia Donaldson-inspired costumes were the perfect finishing touch.”
