Two Young Enterprise teams who were given a challenge to buy items from a charity store, to upcycle and then resell, have raised £432 for Acorn Enterprises.

The Charity Auction Task involved students using a budget to buy goods at Acorn which they then upcycled and promoted. The task was introduced as the student access to traditional sales channels was limited due to COVID restrictions. The teams were given one lot each in the 16th December 2020.  Jersey auction house, Simon Drieu hosted the online auction.

The results from the Charity Auction, which was held in December are as follows:

  • Team Aurora upcycling efforts generated £220
  • Team Exempt upcycling efforts generated £112
  • (Young Enterprise donated £100 to cover the ‘float’ to purchase the items)
  • Total raised was £432

The Charity Auction gave the students the opportunity to work together to purchase, to add value to their items and to promote their items.  Eamon Fenlon, Chairman of the Jersey Young Enterprise Board said: “Throughout the activity, the teams were supported by members of our fantastic retail sector in Jersey to whom we are very grateful.

“The proceeds raised will go to Acorn Enterprises to help support the amazing work they do, providing work and
training opportunities for people who have a disability or long-term health condition. The Board would like to thank everyone who supported the task.”

Paula Le Verdier, Treasurer of the Jersey Young Enterprise Board said: “We were delighted to support the students as they participated in the Charity Auction activity. It was great to see the lessons the students learned during the finance workshop hosted by Chapter One last year, put into practice as the teams sought to purchase items at the lowest cost and then aim to upcycle and then sell them for a profit.

“We encourage the local community to continue to support the students as they start to bring their own products to market in the weeks ahead.”
