Students from across Cayman, Guernsey and Jersey are once again taking part in the Collas Crill Moot.

Now in its 19th year in Guernsey, fifth year in Cayman and third year in Jersey, the Moot continues to give sixth form students a unique opportunity to experience the legal profession first hand through a realistic mock trial competition.

Collas Crill teams have been visiting schools, colleges and high schools across the three jurisdictions to launch the 2026 competition.

The Moot sees students study real-life legal case notes covering a range of scenarios, including criminal, employment and defamation matters, before applying them in a mock court setting.

Throughout the four-round competition, participants are mentored and coached by Collas Crill lawyers and judged by some of the firm’s partners.

While the Moot is an excellent introduction to legal practice for aspiring lawyers, it also helps students develop valuable life skills including public speaking, research, critical thinking, analysis and teamwork.

Students present their arguments before a judge, played by members of the Collas Crill team, and are assessed on their court etiquette, persuasiveness, clarity, body language, legal argument and timekeeping.

St Ignatius Catholic School took the trophy at the last Cayman Moot. The final took place in the Grand Court in George Town and was judged by the Honourable Justice David Doyle, Judge of the Grand Court.

In Jersey, the 2025 final was held in the States Chamber, Royal Court of Jersey with Assistant Magistrate, Advocate Adam Clarke acting as head judge. Beaulieu Convent School emerged victorious.

In Guernsey, the final was held in the Royal Court, with Deputy Bailiff, now Bailiff, Jessica Roland presiding as head judge. The Sixth Form Centre claimed the title after an impressive performance in the final.

Jason Romer, Chief Executive Officer of Collas Crill, said: “The Moot is one of the most rewarding initiatives we run as a firm. It gives students a genuine  insight into the legal profession while helping them build confidence, advocacy and communication skills that will benefit them whatever career path they choose.

“Supporting the future generation is incredibly important to us, and the Moot reflects that commitment. It is also a true team effort, with colleagues across our offices giving their time, expertise and enthusiasm to make the programme a success year after year. We’re looking forward to seeing another talented group of students step into the courtroom and rise to the challenge.”
