Jersey College for Girls has been named a finalist in the Independent Schools of the Year Awards 2026.
The shortlisting recognises the College’s student-led work on diversity, equality and inclusion. Winners will be announced on Wednesday 14 October at The Law Society in London.
The College’s submission highlighted students’ work to tackle violence against women and girls. Since 2020, students have contributed to Jersey’s Violence Against Women and Girls Taskforce, supported island-wide awareness campaigns and delivered educational workshops to their peers. This work has previously received a DIFERA Award.
Other initiatives include the annual Festival of Cultures, a Modern Languages Buddy Reading Scheme, participation in Channel Islands Pride and support for international immersion students.
In 2025, students worked with artist Rory McCann to renew the College’s mural, featuring inspirational women and themes of diversity and inclusion. The project was led by the College’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Activism Prefects, who organise activities promoting equality and representation throughout the year.
Carl Howarth, Principal of Jersey College for Girls, said: “We are delighted to have been shortlisted for this prestigious national award. Belong is the most important of the College’s core values, and this recognition reflects the passion, commitment and leadership of our students as they strive to build a better world. We are particularly proud that so many of the initiatives recognised are student-led, demonstrating the positive impact young people can have when they are empowered to shape their community and challenge inequality.
“The shortlisting celebrates not only the achievements of the College, but also the lasting impact these initiatives have on our students, helping them develop the confidence, empathy and leadership skills needed to become active citizens working to shape a more inclusive future.”
