The Guernsey Institute of Directors has launched its 2026 Leadership Shadowing programme, offering a unique opportunity for students to gain real-world leadership experience.

As part of the IoD’s Future Leaders programme, the initiative pairs sixth form students with senior business leaders for a two to three-day placement. This gives students the opportunity to observe how leaders motivate and support their teams, offering valuable insight into leadership in practice.

Supported by KPMG, Source Recruitment and Orchard PR, the programme promotes learning through observation. Students are encouraged to ask questions, engage with their mentors and explore different leadership styles, helping them understand the nuances of decision-making and effective team management.

After their placement, students present their learnings to a panel, with the top ten invited to share their insights again at a finals evening at The OGH. The overall winner receives the Martyn Mann Trophy. The programme strengthens students’ confidence and presentation skills, enhances their CVs, and continues to be a cornerstone in developing the next generation of leaders in Guernsey.

The programme is supported by Linda Johnson of KPMG and Source Recruitment, who coordinate placements and match students with business leaders, while Orchard PR delivers presentation training. Together, the sponsors contribute their time, expertise and support as judges, playing an active role in the scheme’s success.

KPMG Partner Linda Johnson, who coordinates the scheme, said: “The scheme provides a unique opportunity for sixth form students to spend quality time shadowing and observing business leaders in the workplace, giving them invaluable insight into how they work and make decisions in their roles.

“The IoD Leadership Shadowing team are extremely proud to be able to offer this rewarding experience to Guernsey’s Year 12 students and grateful for the continued commitment of our local business community. The scheme continues to go from strength to strength, and KPMG is pleased to remain a long-term partner.”

Julia Martin, Managing Director of Source Recruitment, said: “We are delighted to continue our support for the IoD Leadership Shadowing programme that bridges the gap between the classroom and the boardroom. At Source, we see firsthand how vital leadership and adaptability are in the modern workplace; giving Year 12 students a front-row seat to those dynamics is an invaluable investment in Guernsey’s future workforce.

“Our role in matching students with mentors is about more than just logistics; it’s about finding the right environment where a student can feel inspired. It is always a privilege to see the participants return from their placements with a transformed understanding of what it takes to lead, and we are proud to play a part in their professional journey.”
