Wear your odd socks on Monday for Down Syndrome awareness

Islanders are being encouraged to wear their best and brightest socks or combinations of odd socks and get involved in World Down Syndrome Day next week.

Les Amis is joining the #LotsOfSocks campaign and is hoping it will encourage others to do the same, sparking conversations about Down Syndrome as people discuss their craziest sock combos and donate to the charity.

World Down Syndrome Day is being held on Monday 21st March with events and campaigns advocating the rights of people with Down Syndrome. The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down Syndrome. The date has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.

On Monday, members of Les Amis will be in St Helier, displaying their amazing sets of socks, raising money and talking about the work that the charity does.

Jason Loveless, Head of Support Services, said: “Everyone has a favourite pair of socks they hang onto, even if it’s only down to a single sock. We would love it if as many people as possible had a hunt around in their sock draw and came out on Monday wearing some truly memorable combinations. Why not go the whole hog and combine them with a pair of sandals.

“It’s been a difficult couple of years for Les Amis, but we are delighted to be out and about talking about our charity and raising much needed funds after last being able to do this in 2019.”

The charity hopes many people and businesses take part, making donations and sending their photos through to the Les Amis Facebook, using the hashtag #LotsOfSocks to be part of the wider campaign on social media.
