Each year, one of Jersey Mencap’s main fund-raising activities is the South Coast Challenge, a 24 km walk from La Rocque Harbour to Corbiere.
Unfortunately, Sue Kelly (pictured) (Jersey Mencap’s Treasurer) and her husband, Rob Kelly (Head of Client Relationships at Team) are not able to participate as they volunteer to help setting up, marshalling and then manning the final check point welcoming the finishers.
So, for 2023, Sue and Rob have decided to undertake the final stage of the Camino Frances which is a 115km walk from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela at the beginning of April. This is in effect 5 South Coast Walks in 5 days.
Why are they doing this? Firstly, it is a personal challenge and a fitting walk in memory of their daughter, Rachael. Secondly, and more importantly, to raise funds for Jersey Mencap which supports children and adults with a learning disability.
Mencap strives for improved services, choice and opportunity; offering support in a variety of ways. The projects are for local people with a learning disability, they include: Book Club, Singing Group, The Pond Project, Taking Part Making Art, The Social Club, Walking Group and Petanque Club.
Jersey Mencap receives no funding from Government and without donations, these projects would not exist. Not only do the sessions provide valuable opportunities for the attendees, they also provide respite for their carers which is invaluable especially as we come out of a pandemic where many of the clients were considered vulnerable and were isolating with their carers.
If you would like to sponsor Sue and Rob, all funds raised will go to Jersey Mencap.
Jersey residents and companies can collect the relevant tax details needed for Jersey Mencap to reclaim tax which boosts donations without costing you a penny. Their target is a modest £0.10 per metre walked or £11,500.00.
