Time running out to share your views on data privacy – survey closes end of June

What are your thoughts on data privacy? This is your chance to share your understanding, feelings and opinions about the sharing of personal information.

The Jersey Office of the Information Commissioner, the island’s Data Protection regulator, has launched its annual survey entitled ‘It’s All About You’.

The survey should take no more than eight minutes to complete and is open until the end of this month (June 2023).

Last year’s survey demonstrated that over half the respondents were more aware of data protection and privacy, since the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Jersey Office of the Information Commissioner (JOIC) is keen to build on its previous survey to gauge individuals’ understanding, feelings and opinions about the sharing of their personal information. The survey aims not only to gather information on data privacy views but also asks islanders for their overall awareness of the importance of data privacy. The JOIC is also keen to receive suggestions and feedback about how they could further reach out to be as inclusive as possible for all islanders.

In addition, the survey seeks to measure the level of awareness of the Data Protection (Jersey) Law 2018 and to understand how concerned individuals might be if certain types of their personal data were to be lost or shared without their permission. The survey is completely confidential, and all responses remain anonymous.

Information Commissioner Paul Vane (pictured) said: “Surveys like these are so important for us as a regulatory authority, as they help us to gauge overall awareness of data privacy and understand where the data protection awareness gaps lie. The data gleaned from the survey in 2022 has allowed us to shape our community
outreach work and at the beginning of this year, we strengthened our Communications and Outreach Team with the appointment of a Community Engagement Lead and a Community Youth Worker, to specialise in this area.

“Those roles focus on the areas of data protection where the least awareness exists, particularly across the younger members of our community where we have a strategic aim to ‘Put Children first’. However, this survey will reach out to all of the island community and by receiving results from this latest survey, we can continue to generate more awareness about the importance of keeping personal information safe.”

The survey should take no more than eight minutes to complete and is open until the end of this month. Click here to complete the survey.
