The States of Alderney has formally appointed Dr. Melissa McCullough as its new Commissioner for Standards.
The appointment marks a significant step forward in strengthening the integrity and accountability of Alderney’s political framework.
Dr. McCullough (pictured) will be responsible for receiving and reviewing any complaints made under the Code of Conduct against Members of the States, including the President. This appointment brings with it a revised Code of Conduct, which now replaces the former code which was administered by a panel based review mechanism.
Dr. McCullough said: “I’m delighted to be appointed as the Standards Commissioner for the States of Alderney. It’s a real privilege to take on a role that helps to protect trust and integrity in public life. I take that responsibility seriously, and I look forward to working with the States to uphold high standards of conduct and ensure the people of Alderney can continue to have confidence in their public institutions.”
The updated Code of Conduct clearly outlines the expectations placed on all Members and the President and provides guidance on how complaints can be submitted and investigated.
Bill Abel, Chairman of the Policy & Finance Committee, said: “As a Government, we’re pleased to get this piece of work over the line. Whilst there may be a few wrinkles to iron out, it should be recognised that all modern governments should have effective mechanisms in place to fairly and objectively examine allegations made in respect of the conduct of States’ Members. A perception of independence and impartiality on how politicians are held to account is an important requirement to demonstrate a commitment to the highest standards of public life, and therefore the establishment of the Commissioner has provided that mechanism to ensure such standards.”
