Smart medication pilot launched in Jersey

A new digital health pilot in Jersey aims to help residents manage their medication more effectively while supporting independent living.

Backed by funding from Impact Jersey, the project brings together local healthcare providers and a European technology specialist to test a new approach to care.

The ‘Automated Medication Dispensers Project’, delivered by Evondos in collaboration with local GPs, pharmacies and care providers, will trial an automated medication dispensing system in Islanders’ homes. The technology is designed to ensure that those who rely on regular medication receive the right doses at the right time, helping to reduce missed or incorrect medication use.

Over the ten-month pilot, participants will use a smart medication device that dispenses medication at scheduled times, without the need for multiple daily visits from care staff. The system can also monitor vital signs such as heart rate and Sp02, and connect with care teams and pharmacies, enabling faster responses where support is needed.

The project is particularly focused on individuals who take multiple medications, manage long-term conditions, or require additional support from care providers. Alongside improving day-to-day care, the pilot will generate Jersey-specific evidence on clinical outcomes, workforce impact and cost-effectiveness in healthcare delivery.

The project has been awarded just over £77,500 through the Impact Jersey Innovation Programme, with additional matched funding from the delivery team. It is the third project to receive support through the Innovation Programme, which is delivered by Digital Jersey to test and scale innovative solutions that address local challenges.

Commenting on the project Nick Hucker, Evondos UK Managing Director said: “The pilot will explore how technology can improve medication safety while reducing pressure on care services.

“The system is designed to deliver medication accurately, prevent access outside scheduled times, and alert care teams if doses are missed. We’re pleased to be working alongside strong local partners across the island, like 4Health and Digital Jersey, to deliver a solution that helps people live more independently.”

Digital Jersey CEO, Tony Moretta said: “Jersey has a real opportunity to use technology to support more independent living and improve health outcomes for islanders. This pilot is a strong example of innovation being applied to a genuine everyday challenge. By bringing together healthcare providers, technology specialists and local partners, we can test practical solutions that improve medication adherence, support care teams and help build a more sustainable healthcare system for the future.”
