Guernsey Post and Guernsey Electricity have come together again to launch the 2021 Bailiwick School’s Eco Challenge.

This is the second time the competition has been run and it encourages school children to think about how they can improve their school’s environmental sustainability. There are two age categories: six- to eight-year olds and nine-to-12-year-olds and working in teams of two, three or four children should come up with either one major project or a few smaller projects that could improve their school’s environmental sustainability.

There will be one winning team in each category with £1,000 cash prize awarded to the school to implement environmental initiatives or improvements. Last year’s winners were Amherst Primary School’s ‘Team Super Solar’ who designed a way to power the school bus with steam and heat the swimming pool with solar energy and the winners of the age 6-to-8 category from Vauvert Primary School designed a campaign to recycle the student’s crisp packets.

Dawn Gallienne, Head of Corporate Engagement at Guernsey Post said: “This is a great opportunity to engage children in thinking about positive environmental behaviour change. We had some really creative entries last time, and we can’t wait to see this year’s ideas”.

Imogen Berryman, Communications Specialist at Guernsey Electricity said: “The challenge is a great way to empower the students to implement positive environmental projects in their school. Previous winners have used the prize money to install planters with plants to increase biodiversity and rainwater butts to control the surface water and reduce flooding”.

The competition is now open and closes on Friday 28th May. Further details and an information pack can be found here.
