Though this summer has been full of warm days and calm seas, it has proven to be a tricky season for disability charity Wetwheels Jersey.
Wetwheels Jersey provides disabled and disadvantaged islanders, and their families and carers, with the opportunity to experience the joy of the sea with their specially designed and fully accessible powerboat.
These free trips allow their passengers to build confidence, extend their horizons, challenge their self perceptions and discover new opportunities.
This year’s lockdown, following the outbreak of COVID-19, not only proved difficult for the charity – who have struggled with fundraising as a result – but also those islanders with disabilities.
Now, the charity’s trips are providing a much-needed positive experience and escape for their passengers. Nick Crolla, Head of Sales and Marketing at Rubis, said: “As a charity providing valuable marine experiences, Rubis has been happy to support Wetwheels Jersey since its launch in 2013.
“Following a tricky year for everyone, we are delighted to provide a fuel donation towards Wetwheels Jersey’s running costs for the summer. The sea should be accessible to all”.
Dina Cook, Operations Director of Wetwheels Jersey added: “We are incredibly grateful for Rubis’ support. This donation towards the cost of our fuel will go a long way in ensuring we can continue to operate free trips for those who need them.
“Following a difficult year, these journeys are proving to be invaluable for our passengers and it is wonderful to see the positive impact they have”.
Dylan Moreton, and his mother Jackie, are two of the recent passengers to board Wetwheels Jersey.
Jackie commented: “We had a wonderful afternoon. My son Dylan loves these trips and the photos we take of him on Wetwheels radiate the joy he feels on the water. Thank you to the Wetwheels Jersey crew for all that you do”.
