The Pollinator Project is calling for entries for the Young Photographer category in the Bailiwick Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition run by Guernsey Arts.
The Barry Wells Award of £500 will be made to the winning film or photo of a pollinator in the Bailiwick. Entry is open to anyone up to the age of 24 in full or part time education.
“This is the second year we have supported this category, and we are so looking forward to seeing the amazing entries. You never know quite what will come in from across the Bailiwick” said Gordon Steele, Chair of the Pollinator Project.
”Last year we had an amazing array of bees, butterflies, moths and flies all doing that essential job of pollinating flowers. Increasingly we are seeing them active right through the year, who hasn’t seen a red admiral or a huge queen bumblebee going from flower to flower even at this time of year. Of course, plenty of us have images on our phones taken from spring and summer- it would be nice to be taken back to those warm summer days with a photos of bees in an orchard or a meadow.”
Last year’s judges were impressed with all the entries and it just showed you don’t need macro lenses, and sophisticated cameras to take great photos. “I’m sure last year’s winner Ajax Amy from Elizabeth College won’t mind me saying that his photo was a spur of the moment thing, taken with a smartphone, just a brilliant impulse shot.” said Gordon.
“This award has been made possible by generous donations made in memory of Barry Wells, co-founder of the charity, who passed away last year. “Barry was an inspiration, he had so much knowledge and would share it gladly with everyone he met. Barry the Bugman was a constant feature of our schools’ programme and we know he would have loved the thought of supporting young photographers.”
All shortlisted photos will be put on display in the Greenhouse Gallery from the 30th January and entrants will be invited to the prize giving night on the 30th January 2026.
