Jersey-based artists, here’s a great chance to leap across the Channel. Thanks to an initiative by the Département d’Ille-et-Vilaine in France, a place is being secured for a Jersey artist within their established ‘collège’ residencies.
This French department runs artist residencies within their secondary schools (collèges), catering to students aged 11 to 15, encouraging creative exploration and fostering a dialogue between cultural and pedagogical realms (click here for further details).
As the chosen artist, you’ll craft an artistic journey for and with a class of French students.
While imparting your knowledge and techniques, you will witness the transformative power of art on the young minds. This engagement not only allows the students to actively delve into artistic practices but also offers you, the artist, an opportunity to innovate your creative process in an enriching academic environment.
Location and timing
The setting will be a collège in the scenic region of St Malo, with the precise school to be confirmed. The residency will unfold around March and June 2024, entailing about 20 hours of contact time, typically spread over 20 weeks.
A stipend of £60 per hour spent in contact with the students. Each day you dedicate to the collège will also attract a £25 food allowance. Moreover, the Government of Jersey will shoulder the cost of your ferry travels to St Malo. At this stage, it is planned for artist to make daytrips to St Malo, which would avoid accommodation costs.
The selection will be a cooperative effort between the Government of Jersey and the Département d’Ille-et-Vilaine. After expressing your interest, a pre-selection will be made. Should you be successful, you’ll have a digital and an in-person meeting with the collège, to jointly develop the project.
Following the finalisation of residency details with all parties, a legal contract will be signed.
