A consultant ophthalmologist with extensive eyecare expertise and a special interest in cataract surgery has been welcomed to the Medical Specialist Group this month.
Mr Martin Anderson (pictured) joins Miss Juliana Helou, who started in February, and long-serving consultants Mr Mike Blundell and Mr Nick Watson to bring the team back to its full complement of four permanent ophthalmologists.
MSG chair Dr Steve Evans said: “We’re delighted to welcome Mr Anderson to the team. With his experience and expertise and his commitment to patient care, he will be a great asset to the community we serve.
“I’d like to thank the whole ophthalmology team for the way they have worked to maintain a high quality service over the past year, with the support of experienced locum ophthalmologists. We’re very pleased to once again have a full team of four great ophthalmologists in post who are here for our patients every step of the way.”
Before joining the MSG, Mr Anderson worked as a consultant ophthalmologist at the Scottish National Cataract Treatment Centre, NHS Golden Jubilee Hospital. He is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and the European Board of Ophthalmology.
He completed his specialist ophthalmology training in Edinburgh and Fife, after studying medicine at the University of Glasgow, gaining extensive experience across multiple eyecare subspecialties.
In addition to his clinical work, Mr Anderson is passionate about global health. He is an honorary research fellow at the University of St Andrews, where he contributes to research and is actively involved in the teaching and training of eyecare workers in sub-Saharan Africa.
“I’m delighted to be joining the team at the MSG,” said Mr Anderson. “I believe strongly in the importance of continuity of care, working closely with patients from initial consultation through treatment and ongoing follow-up to ensure the best possible outcomes. The opportunity to deliver this level of continuous, personalised care was one of the key factors that attracted me to this position in Guernsey.
“On a personal note, I’m delighted to be relocating to such a beautiful island and look forward to exploring Guernsey’s stunning beaches through open water swimming, as well as making the most of everything this island has to offer for young families.”
