Two members of Manx Care General Practice have been recognised as award winners following nominations from their Medical students.
Castletown Medical Centre’s Dr Saleem and Practice Manager Debbie Longan were nominated by their students in the 2024-2025 University of Manchester Medicine Student-Led Teaching Awards, with Dr Saleem winning his award in the category of Best Community Teacher, and Debbie winning as Best Non-Teaching Staff Member.
Each year, representatives of the MBChB (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) Student Programme organise the Student-Led Teaching Awards. University of Manchester medical students can nominate members of staff who they feel should be acknowledged for their excellence in teaching, or who have gone above and beyond in their help and support of medical students. Some of these students completed their placements at Castletown Medical Centre, and were clearly highly satisfied with their experiences.
Nominations are judged by a team of student representatives, and it is understood that this year there were 47 nominations.
Manx Care is very proud of Dr Saleem and Debbie, who evidently made a lasting positive impression on their students during their time at the Practice. The winning colleagues will collect their awards later this year at the Medical School’s Celebration of Achievement Evening in Manchester.
Dr Saleem said: “I am honoured to win this award, and I am so grateful for the hard-working team at Castletown Medical Centre, who support me teaching the medical students. Teaching is a passion of mine, and to win an award for doing something that I love is humbling. I would also like to thank our fantastic patients, who accommodated the medical students so well. You have given the students an unforgettable experience and I really appreciate your kindness.”
Debbie added: “I am humbled but absolutely thrilled to win the award for Best Non-teaching Staff Member. This award is a testament to the great work we do as a team here at Castletown Medical Centre. We strive to continue to provide the ongoing high-quality teaching and support for our medical students, particularly with the pressures we are facing in General Practice.
“Thank you to the Manchester Medical Students for their kind nominations, and we look forward to meeting and working with our next medical students in the autumn.”
