Jersey-based writer and director Andy Lowe is producing a new period folk-horror short film set in the island in 1897.

Bread follows two men stranded in the isolated Jersey wilderness as their supplies begin to run dangerously low. As hunger, paranoia and desperation take hold, their struggle for survival begins to reveal something more disturbing.

Written and directed by Andy (pictured), the film explores themes of sacrifice, greed, madness and folklore against the backdrop of Jersey’s landscape.

Rather than focusing on the more familiar image of the island, the production will explore its ancient landscapes, isolated woodland and associations with folklore and superstition.

The film is bringing together Jersey-based creatives alongside experienced professional talent. Composer Jennah Smart is creating the original score, while RSC actor Al Barclay is attached to the cast.

The project has received support from Arthouse Jersey and is continuing to seek additional financial and in-kind backing as it moves towards filming. This could include sponsorship or practical contributions such as catering, props, transport, equipment and other production resources.

Once completed, Bread will be submitted to international film festivals, with the aim of taking a Jersey-made production to audiences beyond the island.

Andy has previously received recognition at international film festivals for work across areas including horror, editing, acting and original score. His filmmaking focuses on atmospheric storytelling, psychological horror, folklore and darker aspects of human nature.

The project has also attracted local media interest, with Andy appearing on BBC Jersey to discuss the film and the process of creating an independent production in Jersey, alongside coverage in the Jersey Evening Post.

Andy said: “Jersey has some incredible landscapes and backdrops for film, but I wanted to explore a darker, more ancient side of the island that audiences don’t necessarily associate with it.”
