His Excellency, the Lieutenant Governor, Vice Admiral Jeremy Kyd is planting a commemorative tree at Parade Gardens on Tuesday.
His Excellency will be joined by the Connétable of St Helier, Simon Crowcroft and Jersey Trees for Life to mark the launch of the Jersey Tree Fund.
The purpose of this new initiative is to raise money to cover the cost of replanting trees and hedgerow destroyed by Storm Ciarán across the island.
The new tree is a Liquidambar styraciflua (sweet gum), a vividly colourful deciduous tree native to the warm temperate areas of eastern North America. It replaces its fallen predecessor, a beech planted in 2008 to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the end of World War One.
“Storm Ciaran had a devastating impact on our trees, hedgerows and woodlands, people quite rightly want to see these replaced as quickly as possible and so we wanted to create a fund which will be elusively used for this purpose.” commented Alex Morel CEO of Jersey Trees for Life.
“We are grateful to the Lieutenant Governor for initiating the replanting of our public spaces with this beautiful tree, gifted to the people who work and live in St Helier.”
