After starting 20 years ago, the last Jay Morris Spinathon was held on Saturday – the final fundraiser in memory of Jay, who died from cancer in 2003 when he was 30 years old.
Each year since, people have been invited to spin for an hour slot at Club Carrefour, St Lawrence to raise funds in memory of Jay, who was a keen racing cyclist and founding member of the Velo Cycling Club.
It was first set up to raise awareness of Jay’s illness. He had planned to take part but died a few weeks before the event. Since then, Jay’s family have organised the annual Spinathon in tribute to Jay and to support the work Hospice do. His family, friends, and all those who’ve been involved have helped to raise more than £250,000 in the past two decades.
Jenny and Alan Morris, Jay’s parents, said: “We had a brilliant day on Saturday and would just like to thank Club Carrefour, Mark Pickford, the instructors (especially Bettina who’s been there from the start), all the people who have participated over the years, and all their sponsors. Our total for Hospice now is approximately £264,000 – a brilliant amount to leave on. We will definitely miss everyone who has been involved over the years.”
