Rich in mythology and legend and blessed with an incredible natural diversity, Iceland is one of few places in the world where the true force of nature can be seen and experienced first-hand, without having to embark on an intensive trek or far-flung voyage.
This October, for the 4th year running, Bontour are offering a four night fully escorted tour from Jersey and Guernsey, encompassing some of the most popular and unforgettable Icelandic experiences, and all from a comfortable base in the heart of capital city Reykjavik.
Travelling via London Gatwick under the care of an experienced Bontour Tour Manager, no time is wasted on this short but sweet tour. A hearty welcome dinner at the 4* Radisson Blu Saga Hotel is followed up by an expedition by coach in search of the elusive Northern Lights. Frequently witnessed in the Arctic skies above Iceland, the dancing colours of the Aurora Borealis are sight that, once seen, is never forgotten.
Having already hit the ground running, day two of this fascinating tour showcases the famous ‘Golden Circle’ of breath-taking natural phenomena in the south of Iceland. The day begins with a guided visit to UNESCO listed Thingvellir National Park, where visitors are invited to enjoy the unique experience of strolling between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, which butt against each other here in a spectacular geological display seen nowhere else on earth.
The adventure continues with a stop to explore the Geysir Geothermal area, and watch awestruck as the immense power rumbling under the earth’s surface sends hot springs shooting up to 30 metres into the air. After a warming lunch, perhaps of local speciality lamb soup, the tour is rounded off with a visit to magnificent Gullfoss waterfall, which tumbles over two tiers, some 32 metres in total, the scale of which makes ants of open-mouthed observers.
Day 3 promises another unforgettable day, beginning with a tour by coach of the Reykjanes Peninsula, where the diverse and arresting volcanic landscape brings ancient myths and legends of the area to life in front of your eyes, before arriving at the renowned Blue Lagoon, highlight of the tour for many previous travellers. Slip into the mineral rich blue-white water, naturally heated by geothermal energy, and let your worries slip away as you marvel at the nature that created this once in a lifetime experience.
After a busy itinerary so far, Day 4 offers the option of taking time out to relax and explore at your own pace, or joining one (or both!) of two optional excursions. Discover the colourful, vibrant and eclectic city of Reykjavik on a combined bus and walking tour with a knowledgeable guide, and/or set sail into Faxafloi Bay in search of the many whales, dolphins and seabirds that inhabit the waters surrounding this most fascinating of countries.
After a whistle-stop tour of the best of this captivating country, on Day 4 wave a fond farewell to Iceland and return to the Channel Islands via London Gatwick with happy hearts and a host of memories to treasure.
