HSBC staff row for Cancer Research UK

Staff at HSBC in Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man raised almost £1,000 in aid of Cancer Research UK by holding an inter-island ‘boat race’ last month.

The ‘Beat Cancer Boat Race’, an annual initiative for the bank, was held following the Oxford v Cambridge Boat Race. It saw staff in each island compete as teams to see which island could row furthest on static rowing machines located in branches in each island over the course of the day.

The event took place in King Street branch and HSBC House in Jersey, Guernsey High Street branch, and HSBC House in the Isle of Man.

People visiting the bank on the day were able to donate and HSBC staff also donated, with a total of £983 being raised by all teams. The Guernsey team rowed the furthest, covering a total of 104.5km.

The money raised in Guernsey and Jersey will go to the Cancer Centre of Excellence at Southampton Hospital and money raised in the Isle of Man will go to the respective Cancer Centre of Excellence at Liverpool Hospital, both places where islanders frequently travel for cancer care.

Commenting on the initiative, Sue Fox, CEO, HSBC Channel Islands and Isle of Man said: “This was a fantastic way to raise money for such a good cause, and at the same time bring together colleagues in Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man for a bit of friendly rivalry. We’re really grateful to everyone who donated to our total.”

HSBC is a key supporter of Cancer Research UK and last year HSBC Channel Islands and Isle of Man raised more than £5,000 for the charity through a range of activities.
