Face masks and reduced capacity are some of the new safety protocols being introduced by Condor Ferries when it resumes passenger services.
The ferry company, which connects Jersey and Guernsey with Poole and St Malo, has revealed the extensive safety measures it has put place to ensure the safety of passengers and crew. Elwyn Dop, Condor Ferries’ Executive Director of Operations, hopes these new safety requirements will persuade people to travel.
‘We have always kept one eye on the future and prepared for sailing once restrictions are lifted. Unlike the airlines, we have capacity for 800 people on board but plan to carry smaller numbers initially so there will be plenty of inside and outside spaces. Safe sailing through social distancing can therefore be readily introduced,’ he said.
The new protocols also include self-service for food and beverage, floor distancing markers, protection screens and contactless payments. Cleaning will be more frequent, in line with international guidance, and all Condor staff are being issued with personal protective equipment.
Passengers will be asked to check-in earlier than usual and contactless scanning of boarding cards will also be in operation.
Condor Ferries cancelled plans to resume high-speed passenger services in June and is working with the authorities to establish a start date. Meanwhile, Manche Iles Express has announced its plan to resume services between Jersey and France on 2 July, providing the island’s travel restrictions have eased.
