Hospice gardens revitalised through charity partnership

Two local charities have joined forces to bring colour, interest and tranquillity to the grounds of Andrew Mitchell House at Les Bourgs Hospice, thanks to  support from the Coop Community Fund.

Grow has been commissioned to supply and plant a carefully selected range of perennials and pollinator-friendly plants as part of a project to rejuvenate an area of the hospice gardens. The initiative was made possible after Les Bourgs Hospice fundraiser Liz Stonebridge successfully secured funding through the retailer’s charitable fund, specifying that the plants should be sourced from Grow and installed by its horticultural team.

The new planting scheme has been designed to create an attractive and peaceful environment for residents, visitors and staff, while also encouraging bees, butterflies and other pollinators into the area. By combining year-round colour, texture and seasonal interest, the revitalised borders will provide an ever-changing backdrop that can be enjoyed throughout the year.

“When we were planning the area, we were keen to create borders that would deliver impact throughout the seasons,” said Grow’s Horticultural Manager, Stuart Smale. “Our team has really got stuck in and enjoyed positioning the plants for maximum effect before planting them into the prepared beds. It’s rewarding to be part of a project that will bring enjoyment to residents and visitors while also supporting local wildlife.”

Liz Stonebridge, Fundraising Administrator at Les Bourgs said: “The gardens at Andrew Mitchell House play such an important role in providing a calm and tranquil space for our patients and their families. Over time they have become well established but thanks to support from the Coop Community Fund we have been able to rejuvenate areas by our patient rooms to add more pollinating flowers and beautiful borders of colour.

“Working with Grow was an important aspect of the project for us and they have been exceptional with their knowledge, quality of plants and the enthusiasm of the crew. Our aim is to partner with other charities where we can and we cannot wait to work with the Grow team again in the future.”
