Highlands College appoints new Principal

Highlands College has announced the appointment of Lance Chatfield as its new Principal.

Lance (pictured) brings more than two decades of experience in education, alongside a strong background in industry and business leadership. Originally trained as an electrical engineer, he transitioned into education 21 years ago and later completed an Executive MBA. His career reflects a consistent ability to connect technical expertise with high quality teaching and learning.

Throughout his career, Lance has led large academic and corporate teams, successfully driving innovation, growth and partnership development across the UK and internationally. He has played a leading role in shaping modern curricula, including teaching BSc Civil Engineering and developing specialist programmes such as the UK’s only foundation degree in Marine Autonomy. His work in digital innovation has also seen him introduce pioneering virtual reality course content into post 16 education.

Lance has been recognised nationally for his contributions to skills development, receiving the prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prize at Buckingham Palace for outstanding work in maritime education.

As he prepares to take up his new role, later this year, Lance said: “I am honoured to be joining Highlands College at such an exciting time. The college plays a vital role in shaping opportunity, supporting learners of all backgrounds and strengthening the island’s economy. I am particularly looking forward to working with students, staff and partners to build on the college’s strong foundations, expand technical and professional pathways, and continue to create an inclusive environment where everyone can succeed.”

He will succeed Jo Terry-Marchant who is stepping down, on 10 July, after her incredible 35-year career in education, both in London and Jersey and 21 dedicated years at Highlands.

Jo said: “It has been a privilege to serve as Principal of Highlands College and to work alongside such committed staff and talented students. I am delighted to welcome Lance to the role. His experience, energy and vision make him an excellent choice to lead the college into its next chapter, and I wish him every success.”
