The Taste of Medicine course has been run for a second time this year by the Medical Specialist Group (MSG), with three students from the Sixth Form Centre finding out what it’s like to work in secondary healthcare.

The course, which has run for several years, is led by Dr Clare Betteridge, consultant paediatrician, and is designed to offer students a taste of what a career in medicine looks like for those considering working in the profession.

During the week students are paired up and can shadow ten different clinical sessions, including ear, nose and throat (ENT), ophthalmology, orthopaedics, dermatology, obstetrics and gynaecology, various theatre lists, diabetes, emergency medicine, paediatrics, breast clinic and ICU.

The students taking part from 17 to 21 July were Isabelle Wood, Olivia Cotteril and Sophia Robilliard.

Sophia (pictured) said: “The course has been very insightful and I really enjoyed the experience. It has given me the ability to observe areas of medicine as well as nursing. I think it has been very useful for me as I continue to explore where I see myself going in the future.”

The course will be run for a third time in August for Sixth Form students who were unable to attend in July.
