Just days after World Mental Health Day, Victoria College welcomed former heavyweight boxing champion, Frank Bruno, to speak to Sixth Form students about mental health, resilience and his experience of living with bipolar disorder.
Frank shared his story through an engaging question-and-answer session, reflecting on the challenges he has faced both during and after his boxing career. Speaking openly and honestly, he encouraged students to seek support when needed and highlighted the importance of talking about mental health.
Students also had the opportunity to ask Frank questions about his career, his personal experiences and the lessons he has learned throughout his life. His visit reinforced the message of World Mental Health Day: that open conversations can help break down stigma and ensure that nobody struggles alone.
Dr Gareth Hughes, Headteacher of Victoria College, said: “We were delighted to welcome Frank to Victoria College. His honesty, resilience and willingness to share his experiences delivered a powerful message to our students. By speaking so openly about mental health, he encouraged young people to understand that seeking support is a sign of strength.”
Catherine Watson, JSCCA Executive Committee, said: “The JSCCA were honoured to welcome such a highly respected gentleman to Jersey to speak about men’s mental health. His openness and compassion created a space where people can talk freely.
“We are especially grateful that Frank also took time to speak with the Sixth Form boys at Victoria College. His kindness offered those young men something truly meaningful, strengthening our commitment to supporting the next generation with empathy and confidence.”
