The lady who became an internet sensation during lockdown for her calm yet firm handling of bullying during an online parish council meeting is coming to Guernsey to speak at a special Women in Public Life event.
‘You do have the authority! An evening with Jackie Weaver’ is at the Princess Royal Centre for the Performing Arts at 7pm on Wednesday 15th September.
Jackie Weaver from that infamous Handforth Parish Council meeting will be interviewed by Women in Public Life Chair, Shelaine Green, about her life, the meeting and her advice to women.
Jackie will then speak to a panel of women who currently have public office roles in Guernsey to understand the quirks of the island’s unique system of douzeniers and deputies.
Shelaine Green says: “We were thrilled when Jackie accepted our invitation to come to Guernsey and can’t wait to find out more about the woman behind the Zoom screen. We’re looking forward to her ‘plain old common sense’ advice, including how to assert yourself in the workplace and how to take charge of your life.
“Jackie is keen to encourage everyone to get involved in local democracy, at whatever level suits them, and we’re sure her considerable experience and wit will help to inspire more Guernsey women to stand as douzeniers, jurats, deputies and tribunal members.”
Jackie Weaver is Chief Officer of the Cheshire Association of Local Councils and since the exploits of Handforth Parish Council went viral has appeared regularly in the media, has her own podcast (@jackieweaverpod) and is about to publish her first book, “You do have the authority here – What would Jackie Weaver do?”. She will be signing the first copies of her book at the end of the event.
