Women in Public Life celebrate first States building to be named after a prominent local woman

Members of Women in Public Life have gathered outside Marie Randall House to celebrate the naming of the newly refurbished States building in Upland Road after the first woman to be elected as a Deputy, 100 years ago.

Chair Shelaine Green said: “It’s surprising that a States building in Guernsey has never before been named after one of the local notable women who have contributed so much to life in the island.

“Marie became Guernsey’s first female Deputy when she was elected in January 1924, and she served the community for more than 30 years. For 24 of those years, she was the only woman in the States.

“We deliberately held our annual members meeting at Elizabeth College this year so that we could end the evening by raising a glass to the trailblazing Marie Randall. What better way to inspire those thinking of standing for election in June 2025!’

The steps of Marie Randall House were decorated for the celebration with flowery pillars by Claire Galliott of Simply Bespoke.
