Cities across Europe are beginning their transformation into fairy-tale winter wonderlands – and gearing up for the huge crowds of tourists these attract.
Whether it’s peculiar customs, twinkling lights adorning historic, snowy streets, or huge seasonal markets, some cities are renowned for putting on an enchanting festive face. Vienna, Rovaniemi, Frankfurt, Prague and Amsterdam, for example, attract Christmas-loving visitors in their hoards.
Look beyond the obvious choices, however, and you’ll discover a Europe bustling with lesser-known cities and towns offering unspoilt character and charm, and promising a more intimate experience.
If you’re in search of some Christmas spirit on a festive-inspired winter break, avoid the masses and head to one of these alternative gems instead.
Coburg, Germany
Germany does Christmas beautifully, with its traditional markets, advent wreaths and gingerbread houses. Rather than visit one of the country’s biggest and busiest festive markets, head instead to this gorgeous Bavarian town. It has medieval streets, an ancient castle, and a commitment to celebrating the season with authenticity and charm. There’s even a Historical German Christmas Museum in the nearby town of Neustadt.
Ljubljana, Slovenia
One of Europe’s most underrated capitals, this attractive, eco-friendly city comes alive in December with spectacular Christmas markets that can rival anything found in Germany. Explore the annual Fairy Tale Town in Zvezda Park, take part in the Grandpa Frost Procession (Dedek Mraz), and get stuck in to some rolled dough potica cake, a deliciously sweet seasonal treat.
Winchester, UK
Every December, Winchester comes alive with the sound of music, from Cathedral choirs to carollers and classical concerts. England’s ancient capital is now an enchanting market town, which lights up during the holiday season. Take to the ice on a rink in the shadow of the famous medieval cathedral, and don’t miss a ride on the Watercress Line steam train, which offers special festive excursions.
Brasov, Romania
Transylvania might sound like a destination better suited to Halloween, but this beautiful gothic town is the perfect backdrop for a Christmas escape. Think cobbled, medieval streets, huge town squares where you can sip mulled cider, German-inspired stalls, and giant, sparkling Christmas trees. Brasov is also a fabulous base for exploring the magnificent castles and fortresses of Transylvania.
Vilnius, Lithuania
Lithuania’s capital offers romance and Christmas cheer by the bucket load, with its atmospheric baroque architecture, snow-dusted streets, and traditional markets. Cathedral Square is home to festive food stalls and traditional crafts and decorations. For some more unique gifts, Design Square hosts a special market showcasing work by local designers.
Antwerp, Belgium
Come Christmas time, this historic city seems completely taken over by the Antwerp Christmas market. Stretching from Central Station to the river, there are more than 100 stalls selling everything from beautiful candles and wine to frites and smoutebollen, a traditional doughnut. There’s a large ice-skating rink at the Groenplaats – a great place to stop for hot chocolate – and a huge ferris wheel overlooking the River Schelde.
