Crown Dependencies sustainable transport charity supported by Mourant

Cycling, walking and bus travel has been boosted with Mourant stepping-up to the role of lead sponsor of the island-based sustainable transport charity, the Better Journeys Project.

The support from Mourant will help encourage more islanders to think differently about how they get about, and will ensure that Better Journeys Week will be bigger and better than ever in 2026.

Between the 18th and 22nd May 2026, Better Journeys Week will be back to challenge island organisations to encourage more sustainable travel options for the week; by closing car parks, encouraging and incentivising cycling and walking, and hopefully forming a few better travel habits in the process.  The team is especially hoping to see more people this year helping out others, connecting and commuting with friends – which will help more of us get out on buses, bikes and get walking.

In 2025 hundreds of businesses and tens of schools across the Channel Islands asked their people to ditch the car and pull their bikes out of the shed, dust down their trainers or hop on the bus. The Better Journeys Project predict that 2026 will see even more islanders get involved.

2026 will also see the charity extend its reach to the Isle of Man – with Better Journeys Week being officially launched there this year.

In Guernsey, Rollo de Sausmarez said: “We started the Better Journeys Project because we realised that if we can change how we travel around, we are better equipped to deal with many of the pressing problems of our time. It sounds dramatic, but take mental health, depression, the diseases of a sedentary lifestyle, the cost-of-living crisis and climate change as examples: If we choose to walk, cycle, take the bus more often, we will as a society be happier, healthier, wealthier and more sustainable.”

In Jersey, Kate Huntington said: “We started the week’s challenge to demonstrate that trying a better journey only once will help people realise how much easier and better it is travelling without a car.

“Once people leave that car at home we know that they will see how much more they engage with the world around them, how much money they will save and how much more convenient it is travelling by bus, bike or walking.”
