CrossFit Castaway Box 2, Guernsey’s dedicated CrossFit box, has invested in larger premises, relocating from Guilberts Estate to La Piette Complex on St George’s Esplanade on the 1st August 2022.

CrossFit Castaway Box 2 has outgrown its current establishment and has made the move to the new, larger complex allowing members to train with more space, better facilities and welcome new members to the high-intensity sport.

Iain Walker, Co-founder and Owner of CrossFit Castaway Box 2, said: “CrossFit has a fantastic presence in Guernsey and we’re proud to have our doors open to everyone, no matter their ability. We hope the new premises will make the sport more accessible for every member of Guernsey’s community.”

CrossFit is a sport designed to improve athletes’ functional fitness. CrossFit Castaway Box 2 has been operating in Guernsey since 2017 and has a sister gym in the British Virgin Islands. The box operates with a community-focused and welcoming approach to all members aged 16-75. The new move will enable new grass root schemes such as a CrossFit Youth programme specifically designed for 16-18 year-olds to enter the sport.

Rob Wakeham is a CrossFit Castaway Box 2 member and a three-time CrossFit European Championship athlete, finishing in 11th place in 2021. This season he returns to the European stage after again qualifying for the European Championships as well as his biggest competition to date, Europe’s biggest and most prestigious, the Madrid Championships. At both, he will compete amongst Europe’s and the world’s elite CrossFit athletes.

On the box’s move, he said: “This is an exciting new chapter in the box’s history. With a bigger area and the opportunity to train with some of the best kit in the fitness industry, I’m looking forward to training there and seeing other Crossfitters in the island develop. I joined as soon as the Guernsey box opened in 2017 and with hard work, consistency and a good support team around me, have achieved and competed with athletes I only thought I’d see on Netflix. I hope to see more of the Guernsey community join me for a workout in the new space.”

CrossFit was created in the USA in 2000 and now has more than 15,000 affiliate gyms worldwide. The sport incorporates gymnastics, Olympic weightlifting and cardio to support everyday physical needs including flexibility, strength and stamina.

Charlie Russel, Head Coach at CrossFit Castaway Box 2, said: “CrossFit is a sport for everyone of all abilities at every stage of their fitness journey. Our new space has been specifically chosen and designed to cater to everyone’s needs and ensure an inclusive environment.

“CrossFit often has an elite and sometimes scary reputation from the public. However, I would argue that we have one of the most welcoming cultures in sport and our community is no different. Guernsey is often associated with a positive community spirit and our members follow this mantra, going above and beyond, supporting each other to be their best.”

The new gym will be officially opening on 1st August 2022 and those interested in attending a free taster session can visit the new premises on Saturday 13th August at 10:30am.
