A dual-qualified lawyer has celebrated 50 years of being called to the Bar of England and Wales.
James Corbett KC (pictured) was called as a barrister of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple in July 1975. He became a King’s Counsel (KC) in 1999.
James became an Advocate of the Royal Court of Jersey in January 2023 and was the first ever practising English KC to be called to the Jersey Bar.
James is the Principal of JCKC Law in Jersey. He has a special interest in commercial litigation.
Called as a lawyer in several jurisdictions, James has used his half-century at the Bar to appear as counsel in courts and arbitrations throughout the world. He is also a regular speaker at international conferences. In addition to his Jersey and English practices, James is a commercial arbitrator and mediator. He also sits as a panel Deemster (part-time judge) in the Isle of Man.
Reflecting on his 50 years as a barrister, James said that his favourite parts of the role remain the variety of work he undertakes, and representing others – especially as a relatively recently qualified Jersey Advocate.
James said: “Above all, I still enjoy advocacy – to think on your feet is a skill that you have to keep honing, and each case and client requires a different set of skills. You never stop learning, and I have no intention of retiring at the moment – after 18,264 hours of practice, I still have a number to go.”
