Butterfield - Green Award

Butterfield has received the silver Keep Guernsey Green Award from the States of Guernsey for its commitment to the environment by ensuring best practice in energy conservation and waste management.

The Keep Guernsey Green Award, which is administered by the Agriculture, Countryside and Land Management Service, allows local organisations to share their success and commitment to the environment. The Award demonstrates to customers, staff and business partners that the organisation actively plans its energy conservation and waste management, raises staff awareness of the importance of evironmental issues and seeks improved ways of managing the organisation’s energy and waste.

Butterfield has demonstrated its commitment to the environment by putting in place various initiatives which reduce the use of single-use plastic, encourages sustainable living, creates energy conservation solutions and tackles the global plastic pollution problem.

The Bank stopped buying plastic cups for the water machines and instead gave all employees a reusable water bottle, saving more than 150,000 cups per year. Staff also received reusable, stainless steel coffee cups following Butterfield’s partnership with local coffee shop, Muse, which included a 10% discount on orders for employees who brought in their reusable coffee cup.

To reduce energy usage, Butterfield changed its office lighting from fluorescent to LED and they now switch off automatically through a sensor system. Meters were also installed to monitor the consumption of gas, electricity and water, aiding the business in regularly reviewing figures and considering improvements to save more energy.

Butterfield also has an annual community day, which is celebrated with either a team beach clean or another environmentally focused activity in the 10 jurisdictions in which it operates.

Lindsay Ozanne, Deputy Managing Director at Butterfield Trust (Guernsey) Limited, said: “We are committed to protecting the environment in the communities which we call home. We’re delighted to receive the silver Keep Guernsey Green Award, which acknowledges our ongoing efforts. At Butterfield, we are continuously looking at ways to improve our sustainable operations and reduce our impact on the environment. We hope that these small changes across the business will make a big difference in the Island for the long-term.”
