‘A powerful reminder of dark days’ – Alderney launches Ukraine Appeal

States of Alderney President William Tate has launched a special appeal to enable islanders to support the people of war-torn Ukraine.

The move is particularly poignant as Alderney was evacuated during World War II and the community understands the horror of occupation.

The States of Alderney will match local contributions on a pound for pound basis, up to a maximum of £15,000. Meanwhile, The Island Hall is to be lit at night in Ukrainian colours.

“As a community, we know only too well the devastating impact of having to leave your home and all you hold dear at a moment’s notice,” said Mr Tate. “Events unfolding in Ukraine are a particularly powerful reminder to our homecoming community of the dark days of June 1940.

“We have a strong sense of the impact on the thousands of hardworking people who have been trying to flee the carnage and find safe haven in neighbouring countries. We stand shoulder to shoulder with them and want to show our support in a practical way by providing financial assistance to be distributed by the humanitarian relief agencies.

“I am sure that as an island we will respond to the call to show our unwavering support as always. We should never forget the sacrifices made by millions over hundreds of years to ensure that freedom and democracy are inalienable rights in a free society. We cannot allow that light to be extinguished in Ukraine.”

Bill Abel, Chairman of Alderney’s Policy & Finance Committee, added: “It is absolutely the right thing for the States of Alderney and the community we serve to show our solidarity with the people of Ukraine whose sovereignty and safety are threatened by Russia waging an unjust war in their country. I have no doubt that Alderney, which was evacuated at a moment’s notice in 1940, will make a special and heartfelt contribution to help the people of Ukraine.”

The Appeal will remain open until Monday April 4th 2022.

Cheques can be made out to ‘States of Alderney – Ukraine Appeal’ and sent to or deposited in person at the General Office, Island Hall or by bank transfer to:

Account Name: States of Alderney; Sort Code: 60-09-20; Account Number: 49654136 with payment reference ‘Ukraine Appeal’.
