The Guernsey edition of the de Putron Challenge took place on Tuesday at Beau Sejour.
This is the first of the two single island competitions, where Year Six and Year Eight students from Guernsey schools compete against each other. The winners from this event get the chance to go head-to-head in the inter-island competition against their winning Jersey school counterparts.
The de Putron Challenge puts the brightest young minds in Guernsey and Jersey to the test. The challenge brings together Year Six and Year Eight pupils to compete against one another to test their general knowledge, maths and creative thinking skills. This year, the students were quizzed on “Legacies That Last”, focusing on the trailblazers, iconic figures and phenomena that have influenced our world throughout history.
Elizabeth College Junior School has been named the champion of Guernsey’s Year Six de Putron Challenge, beating out a strong lineup of competitors with outstanding knowledge, confidence, and quick thinking. Demonstrating remarkable focus, composure and a lightning-fast buzzer hand, they consistently delivered accurate answers and secured the highest score of the day.
The other schools that made it through the heats, putting up a good fight in the Year 6 final, were Vale Primary School, La Mare de Carteret Primary School and St Martin’s Primary School.
After closely contested rounds in the Year Eight heat, Les Beaucamps High School progressed to the final to face Elizabeth College. It was the team from Les Beaucamps High School, however, that emerged triumphant, winning by just 1 point during a nail-biting tie breaker over the course of five rounds.
Every student that took part received a book voucher reward so they can continue investing in their intelligence and expanding their knowledge. The teams that came in first and second place in their year groups took away cash prizes of £450 and £175 for their schools. Elizabeth College Junior School and Les Beaucamps High School will be going on to compete against the winning Jersey teams at the inter-island final.
The final is being held in Jersey at Jersey Heritage on Tuesday, 24th March, with the winning Jersey schools to compete in the exciting final round of the Challenge.
Hayley de Putron, Trustee of Ana Leaf Foundation and Founder of the de Putron Challenge, said: “Congratulations to Elizabeth College Junior School and Les Beaucamps High School for their well-earned victories in their respective year groups. As every de Putron Challenge comes around, I continue to be extremely impressed with the level of knowledge and creative thinking shown by our competitors. All the teams tried their best, and I hope everyone attending gained some additional knowledge from today’s event.”
