A group of 14 fundraisers from Jersey have raised over £25,000 for Dementia Jersey, the island’s leading charity for supporting people affected by dementia, as part of their Avenue of Volcanoes Trek.
Over four demanding days, the team trekked through a dramatic volcano-lined corridor, tackling high altitudes, steep climbs and long days. The route followed ancient trading paths, criss-crossing the steep-sided canyon and rising to heights of 4,000 metres. Despite the physical challenge, the group were rewarded with stunning scenery and a powerful sense of achievement.
Jacquie Butlin, trek participant, said: “The trip to Ecuador was truly unforgettable. It was challenging in all the best ways, pushing me out of my comfort zone while surrounded by the most inspiring group of people. To be part of something so meaningful, raising funds for such an important cause, made the experience even more special. It’s a journey I’ll carry with me forever.”
Julia Foley, trek participant and Dementia Advisor at Dementia Jersey, added: “Stepping out of my comfort zone on Dementia Jersey’s trek led me across the beautiful scenery of Ecuador, sharing life experiences and making wonderful friends along the way. An incredible adventure and inspiration to keep on walking!”
The trip was self-funded, and all funds raised will go directly towards helping the charity to continue providing vital services and activities for people living with or affected by dementia in Jersey and help create a dementia friendly island.
Nadine Jagger, Fundraising and Communications, Dementia Jersey, said: “We are incredibly proud of our group of trekkers, and we honestly couldn’t have asked for a better group. Their determination, kindness and support for one another were inspiring to witness. We’re very grateful for their dedication and generosity in taking on this challenge and raising such a fantastic amount for the charity. All money raised in Jersey stays in Jersey, and we couldn’t do what we do without the support of our community. Thank you to our trekkers and to everyone who sponsored them.”
