Guernsey Employment Trust collaborates to provide e-bikes for accessible employment

Guernsey Employment Trust, in collaboration with the John Ramplin Charitable Trust, Cycle World and the Health Improvement Commission, has provided three e-bikes to clients, enabling them to travel independently to and from work.

The scheme reflects Guernsey Employment Trust’s (GET) commitment to supporting disabled and neurodivergent islanders in accessing meaningful employment, while also promoting healthier, more sustainable travel choices.

The Health Improvement Commission’s (HIC) Be Active workstream champions initiatives that encourage walking and cycling as everyday travel.

Amy Woollaston, Active Travel Officer, said: “The Be Active workstream encourages everyday walking and cycling, and I fully support initiatives like the GET e bike scheme, which makes cycling more accessible for those wanting to travel by bike.”

Some of GET’s clients have shared how the scheme has improved their daily lives.

Katie reached out to the Health Improvement Commission (HIC) for support in building her confidence to ride her donated e-bike to work. She attended Cycle Confidence sessions, run alongside Wheels for You, and has since cycled not only to work but through St Peter Port.

Katie shared: “Thank you so much to HIC and GET for all your help in learning to cycle on the roads. Getting through town feels like a huge achievement even if the roundabout was quite intimidating. Hopefully soon I’ll have the confidence to do it by myself!”

Cameron expressed his gratitude for the scheme: “Back in March of 2025, I was kindly given an e-bike, and words can’t describe how appreciative I am of this. Without going into too much detail, I have struggled over several years with personal difficulties, and the E-Bike Scheme has helped me gain my confidence and independence back. I can’t recommend the Guernsey Employment Trust enough. They have helped me every step of the way and continue to help during my time in employment. Thank you once again to everyone who has been involved. I truly appreciate it.”

James (main picture) said: “The bike I have been able to use has provided much easier access to lots of places and I am very grateful.”

The initiative has been made possible thanks to the generosity of the John Ramplin Charitable Trust. Tony Woodland, Trustee of the Trust, said: “We are delighted to contribute to GET’s scheme, which is helping clients develop the confidence and skills needed for independent travel, ultimately enhancing their ability to secure work.”

The scheme was also possible, thanks to the support of Cycle World. Ben Walden, Owner of Cycle World said: “When GET asked us to provide bikes at factory prices and discounted servicing, we agreed knowing lower costs meant more people could access e-bikes. We’ve seen first-hand the difference they make, bringing freedom, flexibility, and health benefits. We’re pleased to have helped extend the reach and impact of the scheme.”

Nikki Ioannou-Droushiotis, GET’s Chief Executive, summed up the scheme saying: “The eBike Scheme has been fantastic for our clients. It has increased independence, reduced financial pressures, and encouraged healthier, more active lifestyles. Most importantly, it has removed a significant barrier to employment, opening up opportunities that were previously out of reach. At GET, we are proud to support initiatives that empower people to succeed in work and in life. We thank the agencies involved for their support in making this possible.”
