Guernsey Electricity has announced it will support all additional electricity load applications for off-peak heating solutions up to 18kW, provided this load is managed by the company.

This guarantee allows Islanders to switch to storage heaters, or other alternatives, as a long-term heating options and provides a solution for those currently unable to transition to their preferred electric choice, whilst they await for Guernsey Electricity to upgrade the grid in their area.

It is anticipated that the majority of one and two bedroom homes could benefit, along with a good portion of three bedroom homes.

Kenrick Brooks, Head of Sales and Solutions at Guernsey Electricity, said: “We are aware that many customers are looking to change to an electric heating solution; however some have struggled to find the right option due to capacity constraints on the electricity grid in their area at the present time.

“The new policy will enable more customers to switch to a more cost-effective and energy efficient heating solution and we anticipate strong interest in this. The company has confirmed that off-peak storage heating runs on the lowest cost electricity tariff, is 100% efficient as a long term solution and unlike gas, oil and solid fuel, produces zero harmful emissions around a property.

Off-peak heaters store power overnight during Super Economy 12 low-rate times and rely on 100% low-carbon imported electricity from the European grid. Unlike traditional heaters, modern off-peak storage heaters are more technologically sophisticated and can be easily controlled and customised to suit the needs of the homeowner.

Mr Brooks added: “A further benefit of this initiative is that Islanders will also reduce their carbon emissions compared to other heating methods and this includes a standard electric boiler.”
