Guernsey Electricity commences Princess Elizabeth Hospital cable upgrade project

Guernsey Electricity has commenced a phased road works programme to support the upgrade of electrical infrastructure for the Princess Elizabeth Hospital and the network supplying the South of Guernsey.

This is the biggest cable infrastructure work since the 1980s and involves laying a new 33kV cable 6.5km across the Island, connecting two substations from the North of the Island to the critical infrastructure of the Princess Elizabeth hospital.

The works directly support the States of Guernsey’s programme to modernise the Island’s hospital in addition to driving enhanced resilience and capacity for the South of the Island.

Chris Burgess, Project Management Team Lead at Guernsey Electricity, said: “To ensure the cable installation poses minimal disruption to Islanders and the environment, we are working closely with Traffic and Highways and landowners to agree and deliver the most suitable route for the underground cable.

“The cable will be running from two substations at Barkers Quarry, the halfway and Le Murier School and will then follow a southerly direction towards the hospital.

“We continue to engage with landowners to agree the most suitable route and thank them for their support and cooperation. If the cable route requires access to your land, you will be contacted in advance by the project team to discuss and agree how the works can be progressed. There may also be some minor disruption in neighbouring fields which we will work hard to manage and minimise.

“Details of the route and any roadworks required will be detailed and fully communicated when plans are complete.”
