Rotary ‘raise the roof’ of Saumarez Park’s Japanese Pavilion

The Japanese Pavilion at Saumarez Park beginning to be dismantled

Work is well under way at the Saumarez Park duck pond for the Rotary Club’s centenary celebrations.

The process of dismantling the Japanese Pavilion has begun, marking a milestone in the efforts to restore this well-loved community landmark to its former glory.

The project received planning permission at the end of May and, following a short delay for Rotary to receive assurances from the Environment Department that there is no impact on the bat population as none had actually taken up residency in the roof of the old structure, work has begun with the removal of the roof. The development will progress over the coming months, and it is hoped the project will be complete by the end of summer.

In line with the ecological merit of the build, which aims to protect and enhance the environment surrounding the pavilion, the new structure will include a bat roosting shelf to encourage the return of the creatures who have become fond of the area.

Nigel Dorey from The Rotary Club of Guernsey, who is the site manager and will be overseeing the project, said: “It is so exciting to see the project finally lifting off (quite literally thanks to Bob Froome & Sons) after lots of hard work behind the scenes.

“I would like to say another huge thank you to all our sponsors including Butterfield, Resolution IT, the John Ramplin Charity Trust, the Castel Constables and Pauls Joinery. Without their invaluable support in bringing the project to life, none of this would have been possible.”

Be sure to watch-out on Channel Eye for updates on the progress of the project, as the work progresses throughout the summer, ready for the Rotary Club’s centenary celebrations in 2022.
