The GCRA (Guernsey Competition & Regulatory Authority), the telecom regulatory authority of Guernsey, has published the latest broadband speed data for all four local service providers.
This initiative aims to promote transparency and empower islanders to make informed decisions when selecting their broadband service provider.
Access to reliable and high-speed internet is essential for individuals, businesses, and communities to thrive in today’s digital age. Recognising the importance of transparency in the broadband market, the GCRA has taken proactive measures to provide islanders with access to better information.
The speed test results, available for public viewing, offer insights into the experience of users of each local service provider’s broadband network. Islanders have the option to use these insights, as well as pricing and any offers that are available from each provider, to help them make an informed choice.
When considering broadband providers, islanders are encouraged to take into account various factors, including contract terms, pricing structures, customer service quality, and infrastructure reliability.
Michael Byrne, CEO of the GCRA said “It is important to consider your unique needs and preferences, of which speed is only one element.
“While the speed test results offer valuable insights, it is essential to note that broadband performance between service providers can vary over time and may be influenced by factors such as; the distribution of speeds of existing customers that each service provider has, and the split between traditional and fibre broadband.”
The data is gathered by the GCRA using Speed Checker, an independent internet monitoring service provider, which analyses real-time and historical crowdsourced data, that is automatically gathered from their app and website.
The GCRA remains committed to promoting transparency, competition, and innovation in the broadband market, ensuring that islanders have access to high quality and reliable internet services. It considers value and choice is promoted when there is effective and fair competition between businesses, and regulated businesses are incentivised to perform.
