The Skills Show is taking place in just over two weeks, and we are very excited for this year. It’s a great opportunity for us to showcase the diversity of jobs within our industry, the incredible career progression that can be achieved, as well as the passionate people who work within hospitality.
I think the biggest recommendation I would give to parents is to ask your child to have an open mind, not push them towards any particular career, and let them find what they will love to do for their working lives.
I count myself fortunate to be able to say that I love what I do. I have spent some weeks in stressful positions, I have pulled off some long hours, I have missed some important occasions, I have pushed myself to limits I didn’t know I had, yet I have loved my career.
If we can come out of the Skills Show with a few people who have changed their opinion or perception of our industry, I will consider it a huge success. I believe one of the biggest hurdles we face is false perceptions of hospitality.
One example I use a lot is around wages. I have yet to meet anyone passionate within the industry who hasn’t progressed quickly and now makes a good wage. Its not difficult to get yourself promoted to a higher position if you show willing, dedication and achievement. It’s the same as a lot of industries.
The Skills Show doesn’t finish until 5pm on Friday 18th October, and I would heavily encourage parents to come and at least talk to our village there. Let us at least tell you a little of why we love what we do so much.
