Watch: Milly’s Foundation steps up to support elderly residents as Alderney faces aging crisis
Share on LinkedInTwitterFacebookEmail

Local filmmaker Cam Cairnduff has released a compelling video documenting the impact of Milly’s Foundation, a local dementia charity providing training and relief to carers for Alderney’s residents, particularly focusing on the island’s elderly population.

Alderney, renowned for its beautiful landscapes and tranquil life, is also home to one of the world’s oldest populations. Astonishingly, 72% of its 2,167 residents are over the age of 65, up from just 23.8% in 2001. As the baby boomers age, this demographic shift underscores the crucial role of Milly’s Foundation in providing much-needed support and care.

The video provides an in-depth look into the inner workings of the Connaught Care Home, as Cam joins a dementia training session and interacts with the dedicated staff and residents. The role of Milly’s Foundation is highlighted as a key partner to the care home, showcasing various activities that bring joy to the residents, such as arts and crafts and poetry recitals by viral poet Tomfoolery. Residents also enjoy visits from animals like dogs, which have been shown to bring comfort and companionship.

Cam also explains that he grew up in a residential care home, with his mother being a nurse and his father handling the business, providing him with a unique perspective on the importance of care for the elderly.

The film later features Alderney’s President, William Tate, appealing to the community on Quay FM, the local radio station which recently suffered the tragic loss of station manager Tim Butler. The film is dedicated to Tim’s memory.

A significant portion of the film is devoted to showcasing the fundraising efforts of Milly’s Foundation. Cam films his mother, Lesley Cairnduff, during a local fundraising event known as ‘Flag Day’. The film also highlights the new website Cam created, which includes a PayPal donation link to facilitate contributions in this increasingly cashless society.

This heartfelt video serves as a timely reminder of the importance of community support and the profound impact of Milly’s Foundation on the lives of Alderney’s elderly residents. It emphasises the charity’s essential role in providing not only care but also a sense of community and joy to those who need it most.
